A young sumac emerging in the woodland garden.

The sumacs in the woodland garden tower over the wooden deck.

Looking towards the rear of “the cottage”.

Yesterday, a FB friend from Texas asked me if we had poison sumac in Toronto. I did some research, and yes, poison sumac is native here but confined to swamp and riverbank areas. Which is good as the plant is worse than poison ivy. In some cases it can be deadly. This year I hope to harvest, dry and consume some of our sumac berries. Full of vitamin C and more healthy than salt to season food.
