I’m sure many city gardeners want to help biodiversity. The messaging is everywhere. Yet, there’s no evidence that it is getting through. The advice is focused on a few specific actions or is monetized. However, urban ecology evidence tells us there are many ways small gardens can contribute.

Option A

Replace your lawn.
Plant keystone natives.
Aim for 70% native.
Remove non-native ornamentals.

or

Option B

Learn how your urban garden works.
Add more flowers across the season.
Improve habitat structure.
Reduce disturbance.
Keep soil covered.
Add nesting opportunities.
Grow whatever performs well without becoming invasive.
Make one improvement this year.

Are people more likely to adopt small ecological actions than one large lifestyle change?
